Rusty Henderson, Dead at 47

Rusty Henderson, Dead at 47

Today, we come together to celebrate the extraordinary life of Rusty Henderson, a man who defied convention and left an indelible mark on all who crossed his path. Rusty’s journey was a tapestry woven with adventures, friendships, and a touch of mayhem that made him truly unforgettable.
Born and raised in the heart of East LA, Rusty embraced life with a flair that was uniquely his own. From his days as an unsigned professional skater, where his enthusiasm far outweighed his skating skills, to his fashion statement in oversized corduroy pants from Goodwill, Rusty was a trendsetter ahead of his time. Even his escapades in Tijuana, spending nights in local jails, added to the legend of Rusty Henderson.
But Rusty wasn’t just about wild tales and questionable choices. In 2012, he stunned the world by triumphing in the Paris to Peking rally race, showcasing a determination and grit that few could match. His circle of friends was equally impressive, counting luminaries like Barack Obama and Jay-Z among his closest companions.

Despite his rough edges, Rusty had a kind heart, albeit in his own unique way. He never turned down an opportunity to leave his mark, whether through tattoos, memories, or even the occasional run-in with the law—earning him an "aggravated assault" charge that added a touch of drama to his story.
After a period of introspection during a ten-year stint in maximum security prison, Rusty found peace in unexpected places. His journey led him to Allah, a reunion he had been seeking all his life, marked by a heartfelt return of a borrowed piece of gum—a symbol of Rusty’s newfound serenity and gratitude.
In a final act of defiance, Rusty made Portland, Oregon, his home, embracing its quirks and charms with characteristic gusto. While he may have seemed to do very little, Rusty's impact was immeasurable. His laughter, his stories, and his unwavering loyalty will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Rusty's unique style extended beyond his fashion choices and adventures—it permeated even his approach to music. His hip-hop style was a delightful fusion of Eek a Mouse's laid-back vibes and Weezer's quirky charm, creating a sound that was as eclectic as Rusty himself. His lyrics were a reflection of his tumultuous yet vibrant life, blending humor, introspection, and a healthy dose of irreverence.
As we reflect on Rusty's journey, we can't help but imagine him smiling mischievously, knowing that he's probably not headed to heaven's gates but rather stirring up a storm wherever he goes next. Rusty, your spirit lives on in the laughter, the memories, and the beats of your unique hip-hop legacy.

Today, we bid farewell to Rusty Henderson—the skater who couldn't skate, the jailbird with a heart of gold, the rally champion, and the friend whose presence lit up our lives. Rusty, your memory will live on in our hearts and in the colorful chapters of your remarkable life.
Rest in peace, Rusty Henderson. You were a true original, and your music will continue to echo through the halls of our memories.
